From this client in Woodbine, MD, the request was to integrate a sea container swimming pool with an outdoor entertaining area. The underlying goal was to orchestrate a space that would inspire and enable togetherness with family and friends. A standout aspect of the pool is its window which urged featuring in a way that still made efficient use of the space. Moreover, the design had to consider cohesiveness between the existing farmhouse aesthetic and the modern style of the unique pool. Considered elements like Ipe wood for the deck and a sunken firepit terrace made of resin-bound gravel achieved a balance between country-rustic and clean-contemporary. The pool window — an undeniable focal point — readily invokes maritime wisdom. With every striking glimpse of loved ones immersed in underwater play illustrating the ephemeral nature of joy come the words of Herman Melville, “It is not down on any map; true places never are.”
