Plant of the Week: Nandina domestica

Nandina domestica, also known as Heavenly Bamboo, is a popular low maintenance evergreen shrub. It is very tolerant of drought, a variety of soil compositions, and full shade, but grows best in moist soil with morning sun. Nandina domestica is a unique option for a hedge plant, and thrives when grown in groups, producing clusters of bright red berries.

Light Needs: Full sun to part shade

Watering Needs: Moderate watering

Average Size: 3′ – 8′ Height

Why we love this plant: We love the year-round interest that this plant shows! In late spring, tiny whitish flowers adorn the plant in clusters. Brilliant fall colors appear in autumn, accompanied by bright red berries that last through winter. The soft texture and pliable branches make it a great option for screening utilities that may need to be accessed from time to time.
