Exterior Design Wins a Spot at the 2012 DC Design House

D & A Dunlevy Landscapers is proud to offer our very own, Blake Dunlevy and Gina Benincasa, Congratualtions! Together they have designed a winning bid to participate in this year’s DC Design House. Click here to read more about Blake and Gina.
The DC Design House showcases the talents of the area’s finest designers -all to benefit the Children’s National Medical Center. This year’s event will be hosted in a gorgeous Spring Valley home built in 1956, which will be transformed in just a few weeks time before the house is opened to the public. Designers work on their own dime to complete the project and volunteer much of their time to explain things like concepts and materials to guests. Now in it’s fifth year, what began as a single event to raise funds for the Children’s National Medical Center has developed into the region’s foremost annual residential design attraction and is a leading annual fundraiser event for the Children’s National Medical Center.What: 2012 DC Design House Benefiting Children’s National Medical Center

About the winning design

Just as the family who lives there, the entry garden welcomes visitors with an old Washington flavor. The home boasts a tall, grand stature perfectly complimented by the mature Arborvitae sitting as book ends to the main portico. With the first signs of Spring, the Hardy Gardenia Azaleas bloom in delicate white. These soft flowers contrast the deep tones of the foreground Peonies, showcased within manicured Boxwood hedging. As seen throughout much of the district, Boxwoods line the house façade adding evergreen warmth to the brick structure. The garden provides year-round interest through various degrees of texture and shades of green. The fine, deep green foliage of the Hicksii Yews embraces the iron handrail joining the split stairways up to the front door. Finally, accent plantings of annual bedding flowers and generously blooming urns complete this entry garden. Each plant selection and placement lends to the style of the greater home as a whole, the context of the surrounding Spring Valley neighborhood, and the class of our nation’s capitol at large.
